Drivers, Start Your Engines!

March is one of my favorite months for several reasons, one of them being our annual Pinewood Derby. I love the Pinewood Derby and going and seeing all the creativity before my eyes. I also love all the time Ryan spends with the boys in getting their cars ready.

This year Taylor was the only one participating in the Pinewood Derby. Colby is too old to participate now that he is an 11-year-old Scout. Ryan and Taylor spent at least two weeks on this car and the design, colors, and spinning the graphite on the wheels. Taylor drew out the design, it was so cute! He got out his paper and pencil and drew it out just like an artist would. I have decided that the boys get their artistic ability from Ryan. I can barely draw a stick figure!

The car turned out wonderful, probably the best ever. Ryan would spend his evenings putting masking tape on the car after it was painted and then drawing a pattern for the flames out with a razor blade so Taylor could paint the flames in the next morning. Sometimes I think Ryan is in the wrong business when I watch him with paint colors and designs on cars. Maybe when he retires at 65 he can open a body shop to keep him busy and keep the two of us married!

Taylor was definitely out to win it this year. As always, he won the first heat but when he went up against the other cars in his division, he came in at a solid second. He was disappointed but was happy when he won "Best Design". It's hard seeing your kids disappointed but it's part of life they have to learn to take in stride. We are proud of you, Taylor, for the hard work you put into your car and the great sportsmanship you showed that day!
